Planned Parenthood in Politics

Angel Hemme

Who knew that the American political system would be so anti-women, that Planned Parenthood had to step in? That might’ve been laughable a decade ago, but now Planned Parenthood is an important political player.

Planned Parenthood or its supporters can now be seen present at many rallies and protests, advocating for women’s rights. Planned Parenthood has always been inherently political though, because since its inception, female sexuality and health has always been a deviant. Now, their involvement is just more obvious.

When we have a President, who denounced a health care organization because 3% of their services are abortion related, it’s time for the organization to take a stand for stand for not only itself, but for the people it serves. Why should they no longer serve the populace with oft needed healthcare just because one major political figure thinks the whole organization no longer needs funding because it just happens to provide abortions? News flash everybody, Planned Parenthood does so much more than provide abortions! Planned Parenthood gives out STD testing, sexual education breast cancer screening, reduced price birth control, therapy for transgender people, all the things cis women (and trans women!) might need.

When we reduce Planned Parenthood’s existence to an issue about abortion, we are doing a disservice to the millions of people who rely on it for more than abortions. In fact, Planned Parenthood especially advocates or the poor and underprivileged, the sort of people Trump loves to hate. These are the people being harmed the most when Republicans target Planned Parenthood, and therefore we must fight for funding for this great American health care provider. This is not to say that abortion services are not needed, because when Planned Parenthood involves themselves in politics, they’re letting it be known that women will not be silenced because of outdated societal norms.

Planned Parenthood is clinging to survival in our political system, and we need to do everything we can to protect it, because in turn, Planned Parenthood helps so many people.
